Heat Exchanger Cleaning That Uses Modern Technology

Effective cleaning of condenser tubes requires a sufficient knowledge of what kind of foulant, or build-up exists in the tubing. Different approaches can be made according to this awareness. Thorough heat exchanger cleaning starts here. The results are worth the effort. Even a small increase in water flow can save huge amounts of money that would have been spent in increased fuel costs. Also, the better condition maintained in the tubing, the longer the equipment will be able to be kept in service.

Replacement is expensive and often can be avoided with proper heat exchanger cleaning. There are several methods available, most of them pretty traditional, for good condenser tube maintenance. Hydro-blasting, forcing water under high pressure through the tubing is one mechanical approach. While much debris can be removed this way, some pitting can occur and even possible damage to smaller joints. Tests have shown that the surface often remains rough and ready to start collecting foulant as soon as the water starts flowing again. This may not be the best method of heat exchanger cleaning for every circumstance.

A cocktail of six different chemical agents including a 12% foaming hydrochloric acid solution has also been tried. The results have showed some remaining surface roughness and raise the serious concern about ecological ramifications. A third approach to heat exchanger cleaning involves driving wire or nylon brushes and rubber plugs through the condenser tubing, using high pressure water. Tests showed some mineral deposits remained after this treatment. There was also a significant danger to damaging the softer tubing, especially those made of copper alloys.

The mineral crystallization, which can also cause crevice corrosion, by itself might be prevented by a clarification process. Recent testing has found what seems to be a much better and safer, environmentally-friendly method of heat exchanger cleaning specifically for on line maintenance. Spring-loaded metal or plastic scrapers are shot through the system with the equivalent of a high pressured water gun. They appear to clean right down to the metal without damaging joints or softer copper alloy tubing.

Additionally, custom designed scrapers can be adapted to special tubing needs. This seems to be the most efficient and cost-effective method of heat exchanger cleaning for today's technology. There appears to be no risk to the tubing itself, and the cleaning is spotless with no surface roughness remaining. While off line cleaning may be easier in some respects, using tube scrapers seems to be an effective and thorough method of cleaning your condenser tubes.
